Procedures

It is important to work out

  • who needs the information
  • what information they need
  • when they need it
  • the best form in which to make it available

Being informed is only the beginning

  • it is the outcomes of the actions,
  • informed by the data, that are really important.

A database is part of a system and any system is a communication tool

Working out procedures

Think in terms of the practices that people use to achieve their purposes, and in particular

  • communication first
  • the quality (accuracy, timeliness, clarity...) of what is being communicated
  • the kinds of actions that will follow (who will do what, and why)
  • and, finally, the information and data that will be required to inform the actions that make up the school's practices

Go thoughtfully

The practices that work well elsewhere may not be quite right for you and your school.

Involve all concerned and progress in developmental steps that

  • are easy (everyone already has plenty to do)
  • fit in with existing arrangements
  • make sense to those involved
  • are open to new possibilities
